Motion Sickness Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

When you are travelling by car, ship, plane or train, if you are suffering from motion sickness or travel sickness, you will have the feeling of nausea, sweating, dizziness which will lead to headache. If the motion continues you will start feeling worse and start vomiting at regular intervals. Motion sickness occurs when your brain receives conflicting messages from the organs inside eyes and ears. Children are more prone to to motion sickness than adults.

Motion Sickness Symptoms:  There are a lot symptoms but of  some of them here are very common.

  • Cold sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Vomiting & Nausea
  • Abdominal pain

What Causes Motion Sickness?

The exact cause of motion sickness lies in the brain’s inability to reconcile conflicting signals from different sensory systems. Factors that contribute to motion sickness include:

  1. Visual-Vestibular Conflict: The mismatch between visual input and inner ear balance sensors is the primary trigger for motion sickness.
  2. Travel Mode: Certain forms of travel, such as boat rides or turbulent flights, are more likely to induce motion sickness due to intense or erratic movements.
  3. Individual Sensitivity: Some people are more predisposed to motion sickness due to genetic factors, inner ear sensitivity, or underlying conditions like migraines.
  4. Environmental Factors: Poor ventilation, strong odors, and lack of fresh air can exacerbate symptoms.
  5. Stress and Anxiety: Heightened emotional states can amplify your perception of discomfort, making motion sickness more likely.

What one should do while Travelling: There are several ways and measures  that would help to every individual  to overcome the situation who are suffering from motion sickness symptoms.

  • One should make sure that you have access to fresh air. Avoid strong odour and smoking.
  • Before commencing your travel eat little food. Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks before or during the travel.
  • Try taking motion sickness pills , before travel by the advise of  your consulting doctor.
  • While travelling in car or train one should try to focus on the horizon or something in a distance in the direction in which you are travelling.
  • One should avoid reading, looking down or writing.
  • While on board sitting at the right place is very important, in train try to choose window seat. In plane try to sit in the centre and in car sit in the front seat.
  • If you have motion sickness try to plan your travel in the night, if only you can manage your sleep while travelling.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking sufficient amount of water.

Remedies: If the motion sickness symptom is persistent you should always consult you doctor he will prescribe some anti nausea medicine which will help in overcoming the problem.

Natural remedies: It is said that eating or nibbling a small piece of ginger before travel it may help in overcoming motion sickness symptoms.
